Donut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon is a must-visit destination for winter hikers, offering a perfect mix of adventure, beauty, and fun. This family-friendly trail is ideal for creating unforgettable winter memories, and the snow-covered landscape adds a magical touch to an enchanting spot.

The Trail

The hike to Donut Falls is short and accessible, perfect for families and hikers of all ages. Thanks to its popularity, the trail is well-trodden and easy to follow during winter. Snow transforms the surrounding forest into a peaceful wonderland, with trees draped in white and the sound of crunching snow underfoot accompanying you along the way.

We recommend bringing microspikes that attach to regular hiking shoes for safety and ease. The extra traction makes navigating the snowy trail more enjoyable, mainly if icy spots have formed.

The Adventure Begins

The trail itself is straightforward and manageable until you near the end, where the real adventure begins. You must tackle a short climbing section and scramble over rocks and snow to reach the falls. A sturdy rope is tied at this point to assist hikers, and it’s both a fun challenge and a chance to channel your inner adventurer.

Once you’ve reached the falls, the view is nothing short of magical. The water cascades through a circular hole in the rock ceiling, creating a stunning visual effect. When the waterfall freezes in winter, the scene transforms into something even more extraordinary—the frozen water forms intricate ice formations that dangle like crystal chandeliers. It’s breathtaking and worth every step of the hike.

Sliding Down: The Most Fun Part

After taking in the beauty of the falls, the fun doesn’t stop! Instead of carefully retracing your steps, you can sled or slide back down the trail. We brought along plastic garbage bags, which were the perfect makeshift sleds. The kids (and adults!) couldn’t stop laughing as we slid down the snowy path, adding an element of playfulness to the experience.

Tips for a Great Winter Hike

  •  Dress Warmly: Layers are essential. You’ll warm up quickly on the hike but want to stay cozy while admiring the falls.
  • Bring Microspikes: These are invaluable for maintaining traction on the snowy and icy sections of the trail.
  • Pack Light Sleds: Plastic garbage bags, lightweight sleds, or snow pants work great for sliding down.
  • Start Early: The trail can get busy on weekends, so an early start ensures a more peaceful experience.
  • Check Conditions: Big Cottonwood Canyon can experience varying winter weather, so always check road and trail conditions before heading out.

 A Winter Wonderland

Donut Falls in winter is more than just a hike; it’s a full-fledged adventure that’s fun for all ages. From the beautiful snowy trail to the unique and awe-inspiring frozen waterfall and the thrilling ride back down, this hike has something for everyone.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a family-friendly outing, Donut Falls is the perfect winter destination. Bundle up, grab your microspikes, and prepare for a magical day in Utah’s snowy mountains.
